From: Long Island Arts AllianceLIAA is currently seeking jurors for the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to help us identify and celebrate the next generation of young artists and writers!
Join the ranks of the many illustrious artists and writers who have judged with the Awards in the past, including Wangechi Mutu, Red Grooms, Marc Brown, Langston Hughes, and David Sedaris, among countless others. The adjudication process is the core of the recognition program. Jurors look for works that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision.
LIAA is looking for individuals to review both art and writing applications by students from grades 7-12. More info on each category can be found below. If you are interested in becoming a juror, please fill out the form linked below:
VISUAL ART AWARDS
When?
Art adjudication will occur January 3-5, 2024. Jurors will only need to be available for one of the days in the range listed, though they can participate in up to 2 days of judging. The daily schedule is from 10:00am to 4:00pm, but jurors will not be expected to participate any longer than 4 hours at a time.
What?
Jurors can choose to review works in the following categories:
Who?
Museum curators, gallery directors, college and university professors, working artists, and retired public school art teachers.
WRITING AWARDS
When?
Writing adjudication will occur between December 15, 2023 and January 5, 2024.
Jurying is asynchronous and virtual.
All scores are due January 5, by 8:00pm.
What?
Jurors will be read/score writing works assigned to them (should take 5-10 hours) in the following categories:
Who?
We are seeking writers of all kinds (fiction writers, poets, playwrights, journalists, etc), editors, members of not-for-profit literary groups, university faculty in the literary arts, graduate writing students, and high school English teachers.
About the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Since 1923, the Scholastic Awards have recognized creative teens in grades 7–12 with opportunities for exhibition, publication, and scholarships. A few of our industrious Alumni include Stephen King, Tschabalala Self, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol. With 29 art and writing categories where creative teens can submit their work, there are multiple opportunities for students to be recognized for creative excellence. The Scholastic Awards distributes more than $300,000 in direct scholarships annually. In 2020, the Scholastic Awards received nearly 320,000 submissions from students nationwide.
