Real Art Ways News - Movies That Change Us. Community Film Screenings in Honorof MLK Day at RAW

Arts and Entertainment

January 25, 2025

From: Real Art Ways

Every January, we present a day of programming and community-building to draw lessons in honor of MLK Day.

This year, we are screening two films: Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks and Sing Sing. Anti-racist activist and speaker Derek Hall will facilitate discussions based on the films.

From Derek: "Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks and Sing Sing bring two of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s most powerful strategies for social change and racial equality into view: community organizing and love. In both films, we see people engaging with systems built to dehumanize them and, at critical points, choosing to turn to love of themselves and their communities to push back against unjust and seemingly insurmountable odds. Both pieces of art offer glimpses into the personal impacts of systemic oppression and visions for fighting back with the softest parts of our humanity as sword and shield."

Since 2005, we have shown the Rosa Parks documentary to thousands of local students who have come to RAW for Film Field Trips.

Sing Sing is opening in our cinema on Friday, January 17, with a special free screening during our MLK Day presentation.

This year, we are partnering with Community Partners in Action, one of the nation’s oldest criminal justice organizations, formerly known as the CT Prison Association. CPA provides restorative justice services to young people and adults so they can reenter the community and thrive. CPA is celebrating 150 years of service, and members of the CPA team will be onsite before the Sing Sing screening to share more about their mission and vision for the future.

Lunch is available for purchase, or feel free to bring your own.

Our staff will lead a hands-on art activity mid-day.

Guests are welcome to drop in at any time or can stay all day.

We hope to share our space with you on Monday!
