Saturday September 23, 10 AM - 11:30 AM - Corn Husk Dolls

Are you looking for a festive fall activity to do in September?

Did you see the Barbie movie and want to know more about the history of toys and dolls?

Are you interested in learning about play in early New England history?

September is harvest time in Rehoboth, and that means that many veggies like corn are being brought in from the field. Did you know that corn was used for a range of other things than just food?

Well if not come learn about the importance of corn in colonial, and precolonial America and make your own corn husk doll!

Corn husk doll crafting is third installment in the our 2023 “Hands-On History” Workshop Series! Join us in September for a fun children focused workshop where we learn about the crucial role that corn played in the lives of people who lived here in the past. Not only a vital food source, corn also served as an ideal material for making children’s toys! We will discuss the historical importance of corn and craft our own personal corn husk dolls to take home. This is not your mother's corn husk doll.

This workshop is geared toward school age children, though anyone is welcome. Free for Everyone!!

November Paper-Making Workshop - Thursday, November 16th, 6:30PM
Our final "Hands-On History" workshop of 2023 will be focused on the craft and history of paper.

Join the Carpenter Museum in this hands-on experience where we will be learning to make our own paper and testing out decoration techniques! During the workshop we will also explore some of the history of paper and how that ties into New England.

Do you want to know how paper was made in early America?
How about what materials it was made out of? If we still use the same materials today?

Do you have an interest in stationary, or will you be looking for something cozy and creative to do as the weeks get cold?
Then this just might be the perfect event for you!

Tickets are $5 for members and $15 for non-members. Materials will be provided. No experience needed. Recommended for adults.

AIV upcoming Concerts

Arts in the Village Series begins September 23, 2023

Arts in the Village will open its first concert of the 23rd season with a solo performance by Andrius Žlabys. Žlabys’s artistry has received many accolades from the press for his performances of “easy virtuosity” (The Strad), “generous and all encompassing“ sound (The Philadelphia Inquirer),“spell-binding interpretation” (The Plain Dealer) and his “wealth of musical perception” (The Greenville News). This international acclaim has followed his uniquely honest approach to music, as described by The Philadelphia Inquirer: “The beloved C-major chord... rippled off Žlabys' hands with such open-hearted rightness that you couldn't escape the notion that the pianist was acting as Bach's ventriloquist...”

Mr. Žlabys’s concerts have included appearances on many of the world’s leading stages, such as Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, Phillips Collection, Teatro Colón, Wigmore Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein and Suntory Hall. He gave an exciting performance last season with the Haven String Quartet that led us to invite him back as a soloist. We are happy to welcome him to Arts in the Village for his third performance!

After him on October 28th we are having the Southcoast Chamber Players. Formed in 2001, this group's mission is to prevent high quality chamber music for the communities of southeastern Massachusetts. In each program, they attempt to vary the instrumentation, blending winds and strings, and engaging gust artists to present a wide range of musical colors and styles. They have recently joined with the New Bedford Symphony, giving both organizations an opportunity to expand with more opportunities for musicians and concerts.

All concerts take place Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM in historic Goff Hall in Rehoboth Village, 124 Bay State Road, Rehoboth MA.  For more information call 508-431-6879 or go to https://rehobothantiquarian.org/arts-in-the-village.

Spots are going quickly, but we are still accepting applications for the 2023 Crafters' Marketplace show! Click the "2023 Vendor Application" button below for more information.
