School Board Appoints Bernal and Reappoints Young-Stewart to GTCC Board of Trustees

Greensboro, NC - The Guilford County Board of Education
voted on Tuesday to appoint Jose Bernal to represent the school district on the Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) Board of Trustees for a four-year term. The Board also voted to reappoint Bettye Young-Stewart to an additional four-year term.  

Bernal is the interim Executive Director at FaithAction International House, overseeing the daily operations of the agency and staff – while continuing to build and strengthen community partnerships. A graduate of Ben L. Smith High School, Bernal is also a Guilford College graduate with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and minors in community problem solving and Latin American studies. Having moved to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of five, he hopes to improve immigrants’ and refugees’ quality of life by continuing to advocate, educate and help create more inclusive and safer communities.

Bettye Young-Stewart’s term was set to expire on June 30. In a letter to the Board, GTCC Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Treana Bowling wrote, “Ms. Young-Stewart currently
serves on the Finance & Facilities Committee. She has been a valued Board member since 2019, and we look forward to her continued service. Ms. Young-Stewart has devoted her career to community service, and her experience working in mediation and the education sector has been very valuable to the College.”  

Young-Stewart is a retired administrator from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (NC A&T) State University where she served for 11 years as director of operations and compliance at the university’s Student Health Center. She is a certified mediator and conflict resolution trainer and has operated her own business since 1985. At Individualized Service Providers Incorporated, she trains and implements mediation certifications, cultural diversity, team building, etiquette, public relations and anti-bullying programs. She holds a Master of Science in adult education from NC A&T and a Bachelor of Arts in behavioral science from Shaw University.
