Join us for a new exhibition at the Branigan Cultural Center, Small Village New Mexico, featuring photographs from New Mexico State University photojournalism students. It presents images of the people, buildings, and landscape along the 30-mile stretch of New Mexico State Road 28. The exhibition opens April 14 and closes on June 24, 2023. There will be a reception and gallery talk Friday, May 5from 5-6:30pm.
The Small Village New Mexico Project is an ongoing photo-documentary project of the New Mexico State University journalism department. Over the past ten years, under the leadership of photojournalist Bruce Berman, students in this program have documented the people, buildings, and landscapes along southern New Mexico’s Rio Grande River Valley. The images presented in this exhibition capture both the timeless quality of the small villages between Hatch and Anthony along New Mexico State Road 28,and the changes brought about by the influx of new residents and transitions in land-use. As such, they are an important recordof the local area in the early 21st century.
Photojournalism students participating in this exhibition include Talulah Aguilar, Nathaniel Bitting, Willie Cummings, Jewel Dominquez, Juan Echeagaray, Daniel Espinoza, Kaitlin Espiritu, Leslie Gonzales, Hannah Hunter, Colton Montoya, Elijah Reyes, Evelyn Sandoval, and Ivan Perea.
The museum is located at 501 N. Main St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 4:30pm. There is no admission charge. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1. For additional information, visit the website at https://www.lascruces.gov/museums or call (575)541-2154.
