The Las Cruces Museum of Nature & Science will offer free programs for children and families this June. Admission to the museum and programs are free.
“Nature & Science Discovery PreK”
Thursdays, 10am
Nurture your little one’s love of science! Investigate alien life through hands-on explorations, stories, and crafts on Thursdays in June. No registration required. Recommended for ages 2-5 with an adult caregiver.
“Saturday Science – Crime Investigation”
Saturday, June 3, 10am-noon
Collect clues to solve a mock crime scene at the museum. No registration required. Recommended for ages 6 and up, adult caregiver participation is required.
“Live Animal Feedings”
Saturdays, June 3 and 10, 11am
What we eat is important to our health and for the animals in the Nature Center it’s no different. Learn about the enrichment activities we use during mealtimes and more while you watch the animals display their natural instincts. Turtles are publicly fed on the first Saturday of the month. Snakes are publicly fed on the second Saturday of the month. Animal feedings take place in the gallery at the Museum of Nature & Science. No registration required, all ages.
“Desert Safety Workshop: Hiking Safety”
Saturday, June 3, 2pm
As the temperatures outdoors rise, take the time to meet with members of the Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue team during this safety workshop to discuss hiking safety and outdoor awareness. No registration required, all ages.
“STEAMpunk – Mechanical Hands”
Saturday, June 10, 11am
Discover the stories behind science heroes who break barriers and explore the application of their research through hands-on experiments and activities. Ritu Raman is a bioengineer who makes machines out of living cells. Inspired by her work we’ll make a model mechanical hand using common materials. No registration required. Recommended for ages 6 and over.
“SKULLtastic!”
Wednesday, June 14, 5pm – 7pm
Learn about different animal skulls, their teeth, and the ways to identify animals through their cranial features!
“FOSSILS!”
Saturday, June 17, 9am-noon
Explore the 3.5-billion-year odyssey of life with a geologist and real fossil specimens. Learn about ancient invertebrates (animals with exoskeletons) which lived millions of years ago.
“Sally’s Night”
Wednesday, June 21, 5pm – 7pm
Sally’s Night celebrates the first time an American woman astronaut looked back at Earth from space. Learn about Sally Ride and celebrate astronomy with hands-on activities for all ages. No registration required.
“Desert Safety Workshop: Venomous Animal Safety”
Saturday, June 24, 8am
Join the Curator of Living Collections to discuss venomous animal safety during a hike at Soledad Canyon. During this guided hike, participants will learn about the habitat where venomous animals live and what you should do if you encounter a venomous animal while on the trail. This program is free, but registration is required. Participants will meet at the trail head at 8am. Personal transportation is required.
