Sundog Outdoor Leadership Initiative Quarterly Newsletter - September 2025

Clubs and Organizations

September 18, 2025

Crisp mornings, warm days, and cool evenings: Fall in the Midcoast is here!

Here is our quarterly recap of what we've been up to over the last few months and what we have coming up!

Hurricane Island Outward Bound School Sundog Alumni Course

We teamed up with HIOBS to offer a cost-reduced 5-day Burnt Island sailing and climbing course open only to Sundog alumni! Our alumni sailed and rowed in a 30’ open pulling boat, rock climbed, rappelled a sea-cliff rising out of the ocean, took island hikes, completed service work, and had a blast doing other outdoor activities while learning how to hone leadership skills, collaborate, communicate, solve problems, and resolve conflicts.

SUNDOG ALUMNI: Stay tuned for a similar opportunity in summer 2026!

Cornhole Tournament Summer Fundraiser

We hosted our annual summer fundraiser in late August, which this year featured a cornhole tournament! Community members came together to compete in two different brackets for the chance to win amazing prizes donated by the Schooner Surprise, Maine Sport Outfitters, and MountainSea Expeditions in addition to the opportunity to bid on custom hand painted cornhole boards by local artists Zola Roberts, Andrew Orne, Leah Hupper, and Kathie Gass/Susan Dowley. Huge thanks to our sponsors and contributors, Camden National Bank, the Camden Public Library, and Hammond Lumber Company.

Congrats to the Capetta boys for winning the family bracket, and team TNT for rockin' the friends bracket. We hope to make this an annual event!

Intro to Sundog Summer Adventure Camp

We piloted our first ever Intro to Sundog Summer Adventure Camp, open to younger ages than our flagship, after-school programs to introduce local kids to outdoor adventure activities that we offer throughout the school year. We had an amazing time, and participants hiked, swam, paddled, laughed, and played!

One student quoted, "I was scared to flip the canoe [when practicing t-rescues], but after flipping I was so confident!"

We're running it back next summer with four weeks of summer programming, going live for enrollment on March 1, 2026.

Fall Mountain Biking Program

Our inaugural fall mountain biking program kicked off a few weeks ago! Participants are having an awesome time exploring the local trails, learning the tricks and tips of the trade, and getting outside and active after school! Stay tuned on our socials over the next several weeks for more updates from this awesome program.

If you missed this one, don't worry, we got you covered next spring!
