Supporting The Literary Arts In Georgia

Arts and Entertainment

October 14, 2023

Greetings from the Georgia Center for the Book -

Thanks to everyone who has attended one of our events this week. This is a busy time here, and we love being able to share such a variety of events with you as the ones we have coming up.

Join the Georgia Center for the Book and Charis Books and More this evening, Friday, October 13th, for a conversation between Roxane Gay and Josie Duffy Rice at First Baptist Church Decatur (in the sanctuary). She'll be celebrating the release of her new book Opinions: A Decade of Minding Other People's Business. Learn more and register here.

Next week we have the final artist talk for this year's exhibition The Book As Art v.11: Myth & Magic. The first two were spectacular and if you missed them, you may view them here and here. For Wednesday, October 18th, we will have four artists joining us on Zoom: Servane Briand, Catherine Alice Michaelis, Shirley Ritter, and Anne Shackelford. Register here to receive the Zoom link.

We have also now premiered two videos made by artists, with the the second one going live today! Carolyn Thompson explains her piece, "Silenced," which began as a performance piece, in her video available here. Then, if you missed last week's, watch Diane Jacobs discuss her work in the show, "Owed to the Mountain," here. Diane's piece won First Place!

The Book As Art v.11: Myth & Magic is open Thursday - Saturdays, from 1 to 5 p.m., through October 30th. Email Ally StoneWright ([email protected]) if you'd like to schedule an appointment to see the gallery outside of posted open hours. Note that we have scheduled White Glove Days for Saturday, October 28th, during regular gallery hours, and for Monday, October 30th, during special closing day gallery hours of 11:30 to 6:30 p.m. We are going to bring out the metaphorical white gloves and let visitors—carefully—touch the books! Make plans to join us if you'd like to partake. Learn more about the exhibition here.

All of our November events are now up on our Events page! We have had some issues with Eventbrite and will be moving to another ticket provider in the next couple of months, so please read the events carefully and make plans to join us even if an event says it's full. We can't wait for Jesmyn Ward on October 27th and Tracy K. Smith on November 8th, but there's so much other good stuff too—you've got to see for yourself, and then make plans to join us!

In the midst of a busy fall we are also looking forward to Spring 2024 and the next Revival: Lost Southern Voices conference! Our Call for Voices is open for next year's festival, where we invite you to submit proposals for presentations on lost, Southern voices who you think deserve more notice than they get. Please read the guidelines here if you're interested. Applications are accepted through October 15th, which is in two days!

Explore the annual Roadmap to Reading: Great Reads from Great Places through videos highlighting many of the featured authors here. Our selection for young readers is Mama's Home by Shay Youngblood, illustrated by Lo Harris, and our selection for adult readers is Bress 'n' Nyam, a cookbook by Matthew Raiford, with Amy Paige Condon. Learn more on our website.

Have you checked out our 2023 lists of Books All Georgians and Young Georgians Should Read? We hope you find some new books to love! We'll be highlighting one book from each list for every month from now until November in our newsletter and on our website. Scroll for resources and information about this month's featured books.

Revisit many of our previous programs on our YouTube channel. Visit our Eventbrite page and website, or follow us on social media (links above), to learn about our upcoming events.

We'll see you at the library!
