Things That Go Bump in the Night

Ginny Apple, a Master Wildlife Conservationist, is back with another great talk!  Join us to learn more about what goes bump in the night.  When the sun sets and night is upon us, all sorts of critters emerge from their hiding places and begin to forage, hunt—even play! From the Opossum to the Porcupine to the Great Horned Owl, these creatures can teach us lots about the animal world if we just watch and listen. Hear more from Ginny as she talks about these animals, their habits, their howls and their homes.

Winter/Holiday Terrarium

Sharing and Preserving Family Stories

Take advantage of seeing your family over the holidays by having great family history conversations!  Local resident Erin King will share tips on how to do it!   Plus, you’ll learn about some of the tools the Library has available if you want to record or otherwise preserve that conversation!

Are you looking for help learning basic computer skills?  Mouse control and movement?  Navigating a web browser?  Attaching photos or files to e-mails?  In partnership with the Connecticut State Library, we are offering Northstar Digital Literacy assessments and workshops.  You can develop digital literacy skills at your own pace or participate in small group afternoon classes.  If you are interested in learning more, stop by or call the Library at 860-582-3121 to get started!

Teen Crochet
Tuesday, December 27 @ 4:00pm

Teen Crochet is a beginner friendly class that will introduce how to cast on, slip knots, single crochet, double crochet, and we’ll begin to make a granny square.  A supply of yarn will be available, but teens are welcome to bring their own bulky or super bulky yarn, if they prefer a certain color.

Teen Escape Room

In this winter-themed escape room, you’d take time to enjoy the beauty of a winter wonderland if you weren’t already frozen in fear!  Teens will have 40 minutes to search for clues, solve riddles, and turn up the heat!  Space is limited for this popular program.

Letters to Santa
From Monday, November 14 to Thursday, December 15

Santa is getting ready to make his deliveries and needs to know what you want this year! Drop off your Letters to Santa between Monday, November 14 and Thursday, December 15 during open hours. Participants will receive a goodie bag and a response from Santa himself! Pickup of and responses will be scheduled during the week of 12/19-12/23. Letters can be dropped off at the desk in front of the Children’s Librarian’s office or at our Curbside Pickup table. This event is open to children ages birth and up.

Grab a letter template from the library, here or email [email protected] to be sent a template to print. If you want to use a template of your own be sure to include:

Child’s name
Child’s age
Email and Phone Number of Caregiver to contact for pickup
Gifts wanted

Graphic Novel Book Club: Marshmallow & Jordan
Thursday, December 15 @ 6:30pm

Do you love to read graphic novels? Each month will feature a different graphic novel, this month we will be reading Marshmallow and Jordan by Alina Chau. Join us to have a snack, discuss the book, and do some activities. Pick up your copy of the graphic novel at the circulation desk. This event is for ages 9-12.

About the book from the author’s website;
Jordan’s days as star player for her school’s basketball team ended when an accident left her paralyzed from the waist down. Now, she’s still the team captain, but her competition days seem to be behind her…until an encounter with a mysterious elephant, who she names Marshmallow, helps Jordan discover a brand new sport.

December 24th is celebrated with books in Iceland! 
Jolabokaflod (Christmas Book Flood) started during World War II, when paper was one of the few things not rationed in Iceland. Because of this, Icelanders gave books as gifts while other commodities were in short supply, turning them into a country of bookaholics to this day. Read more about this literary holiday here!
