The Kennedy Creek Old-Time Music Festival takes place every autumn at the Kennedy Creek Resort  in Suches, GA. Participants are invited to reserve cabins, yurts, or campsites, and food is available at the resort restaurant. Guest artists lead jams, teach workshops, and present concerts, but the main event is always jamming with friends.

Mickey Nelligan is a multi-instrumentalist from the Atlanta area. He grew up learning traditional music from his father Mick Kinney, and was steeped in the stringband music of the South. Best known for his greasy Georgia-style fiddle playing, he also can be heard playing the banjo, guitar, button accordion, and more, with a repertoire that ranges from old time to traditional Irish, Cajun, and blues.

Originally from Los Angeles, Sasha Hsuczyk is now based in Atlanta. A fiddler, guitar player, and singer, she learned to play the traditional stringband music of Georgia from her partner's family, the Kinneys. Previously, she studied traditional music at the University of Limerick, and finished her degree with a certificate in ethnomusicology at Hampshire College, where she did a research project on legendary fiddler Julia Clifford. She is also known for her leadership in the Sacred Harp community, and is a counselor and teacher at Camp Fasola in Alabama.

Together, Mickey and Sasha have a shared history of playing music in New Orleans, where they performed around the city with their Cajun honkytonk band, the Sister Street Aces. Currently they are performing as a duo sharing their repertoire of old time fiddle tunes and early Carter Family songs.

Henry Barnes has played Old-Time fiddle his entire life and has dozens of blue ribbons, cultural accolades, and successful students to show for it. His love for culture and the folk process are still evident to this day as he digitizes field recordings and visits with his elders. Henry specializes in the music of the Ohio River Valley, where commercial music heavies of the early 20th century like Clark Kessinger, Cowboy Copas, and Doc Roberts of the left their mark, as well as the local folk traditions that arose from migrants during the revolutionary war, reconstruction, and industrialization whose legacies are harder to document yet tell a familiar story of life in America.

Friday, Sep. 6
11am: Workshop – Life and Tunes of Georgia Fiddler Anita Sorrels-Wheeler (Sasha Hsuczyk)
There are no known recordings of fiddler Anita Sorrels-Wheeler, but there are written records of her winning contests in GA. She famously almost married Clayton McMichen and they were reputed to make an amazing double fiddle duo, although in the end she chose a quieter life. In this workshop, Sasha will give a short history of Anita and then teach one of the tunes she liked to play – "Liberty on the Corn Liquor Still"! This workshop is open to all instruments.

1:30pm: Workshop (Mickey Nelligan)
In this workshop we will explore some licks and tricks you can use on the fiddle to enhance your old-time fiddle playing with Georgia style. Looking over a variety of classic tunes from the Georgia repertoire, we will review different bowing techniques and more that can give your fiddling that Georgia sound.

3pm: Workshop – Finding the Right "Wrong" Note (Dan Gellert)
You ever wonder why you (virtually) never see frets on a fiddle? Let's talk about what it means to play in tune, and ways to get closer to that goal.

Saturday, Sep. 7
9:15am: Introduction to Sacred Harp Singing
Want to participate in the Sacred Harp Singing but know nothing about the tradition? Come early for a brief introduction to the shapes, the book, and the practices.

9:30am-2pm: Sacred Harp Singing
All are welcome to join in! We will be singing out of the 1991 Denson revision of The Sacred Harp, a collection of shape-note hymns first published in Georgia in 1844. Newcomers will be provided with a loaner book and some instructional materials, but the best way to learn is to sit next to an experienced singer and give it a go! We will break for lunch from noon to 1 pm. You may eat in the restaurant or provide your own meal.

2–5:30pm: Fiddle Contest

7pm: Square Dance (T-Claw Crawford, caller)
Sasha and Mickey will provide the music for an evening of traditional square dancing. Beginners are welcome!

Sunday, Sep. 8
10am: Gospel Jam (Ann Whitley-Singleton and John Day)
Join Ann and John for an acoustic Gospel jam before you head out! Bring instruments and songs.
