Happy Tuesday!

I hope you all had a lovely long weekend! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 14th, as we are having our big PENNY AUCTION fundraiser! Come on in to bid on some fun items, have a bite to eat, check out our chance prize drawings, and be entered into a fun door prize drawing too! Doors open at 10AM and the drawings begin at 1PM; see you there!

Today!

Animal Architects

Tuesday, October 10th

1:00 PM

Egypt, Greece, Rome; from Thomas Jefferson to I. M. Pei; humanity’s history has been chock full of extraordinary architects and architecture. We, however, were not the first to erect monumental structures! While humans had yet to emerge from caves, many animals were going gangbusters impressing mates with their own monuments! Meet some incredible builders in this one hour picture presentation, celebrating the glory of human and animal architecture. Connect with the Senior Center to sign up.

Reiki Healing

Tuesdays, Oct. 10th and 24th

 1:00 -3:00 PM

Reiki is used to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and restore physical, mental, and emotional health through simple hands on healing techniques with Reiki Master, MaryEllen Foster every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. A 10 minute Reiki Healing session is a suggested donation of $7.00 and clients are received on a first come, first served basis.

Bocce Ball Club

Wednesdays

10:00 AM

The weather is fine and we’re looking for folks who would like to play bocce outside on our bocce court! To sign up or for more info, please connect with the Senior Center.

A Healthy Appetite For Life

A person’s appetite can rise and fall due to a wide range of factors, sometimes causing people to eat less or more than their body needs. Join Dietician, Judy Prager to discuss what affects appetite and discuss concerns and solutions for a “Healthy Appetite for Life.” Connect with the Senior Center to sign up.

Looking for volunteer opportunities or do you simply just want to help make the New Milford Senior Center a better place? Join us as we look to gather new and returning Senior Center volunteers to learn of upcoming events, brainstorm new ideas, or seeing where your time and talents can be shared and appreciated!

Circus Moves: Body & Brain Fitness

Thursday, October 12TH

11:00 AM

Presented by our friends at Circus Moves, join us for a class that’s “so much fun it doesn’t feel like exercise!” Designed to promote core strength and balance, flexibility and mobility, gentle cardio, memory/executive function, mind body integration, and laughter and joy, all fitness levels and abilities are encouraged to join! Activities are adapted for standing or sitting, and participants are invited to stand or sit as preferred at any time. This class offering is made possible by Senior Center ARPA allocations and is free of charge for participants. Space is limited so to sign up, please connect with the Senior Center.

Walkie Talkies Walking Group

 Fridays, October 13th and 27th, 10:00 AM

Harrybrooke Park100 Still River Dr New Milford, CT Known as the “Hidden Gem of New Milford”, join the Walkie Talkie Walking Group at Harrybrooke Park featuring a flat and smooth walking path, lots of shade, and park benches. To join this walking group, please connect with the Senior Center for meet details or to set up transportation with our busses.

New Milford Senior Center Penny Auction

Saturday, October 14th

 Doors open at 10:00 AM

 Back by popular demand, we will be holding our annual Penny Auction as a fundraising effort for the New Milford Senior Center Enrichment Fund. We welcome items in clean and excellent condition to be donated as penny auction items from Monday, September 25th to Friday, October 6th only, no exceptions. Thank you for your generosity and mark your calendars for another great event to benefit our very own New Milford Senior Community! This event is open to the public and admission is free. Senior Transportation will be available by request so please connect with the Senior Center. Drawings will being promptly at 1:00 PM. Spread the word and see you there

LQBTQIA+ Allies Intergenerational Halloween Social

Dress up in your favorite costume, or come as you are. We will have pizza and snacks and spend time together in a safe space that is open to all LQBTQIA+ and Allies!

Our Senior Advisors are ready to help! They are here Monday- Friday 8AM-4PM, please call the center to set up an appointment.

About 988

988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress. That could be:

- Thoughts of suicide
- Mental health or substance use crisis, or
- Any other kind of emotion distress

People can call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. 988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help. 

Energy Assistance (CEAP)

Application Period: Generally, applications for deliverable fuels (oil, propane, and kerosene) are accepted starting September 1st. The first day EA clients can receive a delivery is around November 1st. Generally, electric heated households are scheduled for appointments after January 1st. Eligibility Requirements: Income and asset guidelines are subject to change, but you may connect with the Senior Center for the most up-to-date figures for this season. Documents required: Current income from all sources (social security, pensions, work, interest and dividends, etc.) current assets, (bank statements from all bank accounts, stocks, bonds, IRAs and CDs) and a current electric bill.

-Proof of rent and utilities paid in previous year via note from Landlord or payment records.

Upcoming Medicare Open Enrollment

You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Health Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) with or without drug coverage during these times: Open Enrollment Period. From October 15TH- December 7TH each year, you can join, switch, or drop a plan. Your coverage will begin on January 1 (as long as the plan gets your request by December 7). Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. From January 1 March 31 each year, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare (and join a separate Medicare drug plan) once during this time. Note: You can only switch plans once during this period. For more info or to request an appointment, connect with the Senior Center.

CHEZ J serves lunch Monday - Thursday at 12:00 PM and there is a suggested donation of $4.00. Come on in for a program then stay for lunch! Please note that the menu is always posted in the monthly newsletter.

Sign up in person, on our Touch Screen, or by phone, at least 3 days in advance!

Chef Jay has placed a suggestion box on the lunch table! Your feedback is important and valued. Please take the time to write down what you love, what you do not love, some suggestions, share a recipe, what you would like to see, or even a recipe you would like to share.

Senior Bus Transportation

If you live in New Milford, Gaylordsville or Northville and need transportation to come to the center, go shopping or go to a friend’s house? All you have to do is give us a call a few days ahead of time to get on our bus schedule. Call us at 860-355-6075 to schedule your ride and meet our fantastic bus drivers, Erin, Tom and Sue.

Durable Medical Equipment Lending Closet

Did you know that the New Milford Senior Center houses a “lending closet” of durable medical equipment for donated items in clean + excellent condition for those in need? Connect with the Senior Center for further details, availabilities, or acceptable items for donation. 

The Lunch Bunch

The Lunch Bunch is back and meets one Saturday a month to enjoy a new or favorite area restaurant. Join in for delicious local fare and friendships! Connect with the Senior Center for contact information.
