Governor Murphy Holds Second Roundtable Discussion with Medicaid Recipients as Congress Slashes Health Care Funding

Governor Phil Murphy met with constituents of the Fourth Congressional District of New Jersey whose lives would be negatively impacted by a U.S. House of Representatives-approved bill that cuts more than $700 billion from Medicaid – a federal-state insurance program that provides free or low-cost health care coverage and services to eligible low-income individuals and families, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Joined by Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman, Children and Families Commissioner Christine Norbut Beyer, Acting Health Commissioner Jeffrey Brown, and Assemblyman Alexander “Avi” Schnall, the Governor led a roundtable discussion at the Strand Theater in Lakewood with six individuals who reside in New Jersey's Fourth Congressional District – which is comprised of parts of Monmouth and Ocean Counties – who rely on Medicaid to access critical health coverage and services. The Fourth Congressional District of New Jersey is represented by Congressman Chris Smith, who last week voted for legislation to slash Medicaid funding (“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025,” also known as H.R. 1) along with fellow Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Medicaid is a critical lifeline that has enabled millions of New Jerseyans to access everything from annual check-ups to lifesaving health care to supportive services for complex medical needs. The House Republicans' disastrous budget bill would rip away this lifeline, leaving hundreds of thousands of our residents without health coverage. This bill represents a profound betrayal of New Jersey’s working families,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “There are real-life consequences to the provisions of this bill, and they will have the biggest impact on families that are already struggling. It is shameful that Representative Chris Smith – along with his fellow Republican members of New Jersey’s Congressional Delegation, Tom Kean Jr. and Jeff Van Drew – put party over people and voted in favor of cutting Medicaid funding. These elected officials bear the responsibility for the harm this bill will create in communities across our state. Our Administration will continue to do everything in our power to preserve funding and protect access to care, and we call on the Senate to fight back against these harmful cuts.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Break Ground on Dyer Avenue Deck-Overs, Marking First Stage of New Midtown Bus Terminal Construction

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey broke ground on the Dyer Avenue deck-overs, marking the first stage in construction of the new Midtown Bus Terminal. The deck-overs will facilitate construction of the new bus terminal and will be used for staging of buses during construction. Ultimately, the deck-overs will be transformed into 3.5 acres of new publicly accessible open green space after construction of the new bus terminal is complete.

“Here in New York, we are showing the world what is possible when government and the local community commit to making the vision of modern infrastructure a reality,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul. “A new Midtown Bus Terminal will deliver an enhanced experience for millions of riders, breathe new life into the surrounding neighborhood and ensure that this gateway to the city is one New Yorkers can be proud of for generations to come.”

“Today’s groundbreaking reflects our shared commitment to improving the transit experience throughout the tri-state area. Upon completion, the new state-of-the-art Midtown Bus Terminal will serve hundreds of thousands of commuters each day as they head to work, school, medical appointments, or return home,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. “This project is another major step toward modernizing our transportation infrastructure, improving the commuter experience, and reducing bus congestion. Just as importantly, it will create thousands of good-paying union jobs, bolstering our workforce and economy.”

9/11 Memorial & Museum Announces Free Field Trips For Tri-State Area Students

In a powerful collaboration between the State of New Jersey, the Wilf Family Foundations, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, students across New Jersey will now be able to visit the Museum at no cost as part of a school-sanctioned event, thanks to a major investment designed to expand access to 9/11 education.

The new public-private initiative will fund both in-person and virtual field trips alongside self-guided school visits for students in grades 3-12 in New Jersey and across the tri-state area, enabling teachers to engage students in age-appropriate lessons about the historical significance of 9/11, the stories of those who were killed, the heroism of those who responded and rebuilt, and the values of resilience, empathy, and civic responsibility. Support from the Wilf Family Foundations will also fund the creation of new companion resources to complement the experience of self-guided student groups who visit the Museum as the institution seeks to reach 20 million students by the 25th anniversary of 9/11 in 2026.

“The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks left a profound mark on New Jersey families, and the memory of that painful day remains as important as ever,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. “For so many of us—whether we watched on television, from across the Hudson River, or the streets of lower Manhattan—we will never forget the events of 9/11. Now, there is a whole generation for whom 9/11 is just images on TV or in a history book. These field trips will ensure our students understand what happened on 9/11 and its connection to our communities, helping them to navigate the challenges of today’s world with knowledge and empathy.”

Governor Murphy and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Announce Runway Under Rehabilitation at Newark Liberty International Airport to Reopen Monday – 13 Days Ahead of Schedule

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that a runway that had been closed for a planned rehabilitation at Newark Liberty International Airport will reopen 13 days ahead of schedule, allowing regular runway operations to resume at Newark Liberty on Monday, June 2. The Port Authority continues to support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in its efforts to return capacity to the airport.

The planned rehabilitation work was required for Runway 4L-22R to meet FAA safety standards for runways. As FAA staffing and operational challenges impacted air traffic controllers’ ability to effectively use the remaining two operational runways at Newark Liberty during the rehabilitation, the Port Authority worked to accelerate the construction schedule by bringing in additional crews, expanding shifts, and enabling construction to take place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Thank you to the Port Authority for their partnership and hard work in getting Newark’s runway rebuilt ahead of schedule. Great job!” said U.S Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “As we approach the busy summer travel season, this key milestone puts us on a path to further reducing congestion, enhancing safety, and ensuring a seamless travel experience. With the runway completed, we’ll continue our work to harden the telecoms infrastructure and improving the staffing pipeline for the airspace.”

“I commend the crews who have worked tirelessly to get this critical project done ahead of schedule,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “I’m grateful for New Jersey’s partnership with the Port Authority and the FAA as we work to return to full capacity at Newark Airport. New Jersey will do all we can to support plans from the USDOT to invest in modernizing our air traffic control system and fully staffing our air traffic controllers.”
