Free Pumpkin Composting in Avon

The Town of Avon begins offering a new sustainability composting service after Halloween. Starting on November 1, anyone can take their pumpkins to compost for free at Lot 5, Avon’s free recycling center. The free pumpkin composting event will run from November 1 to November 9 and will be accessible from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. There will be a clearly marked designated dumpster for pumpkins. This event is accepting pumpkins only this year.

Please remove candles, artificial lighting, wax, glitter, paint, and any other non-compostable decorations before putting the pumpkins in the dumpster.

This initiative demonstrates Avon’s long-standing values on environmental stewardship and sustainability by practicing composting, which is a major climate action that curbs food waste as well as reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Organic waste, like pumpkins, produces methane when left in the landfill. Methane is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Avon residents can help contribute to this issue by doing something as simple as composting Halloween pumpkins instead of throwing them out.

There are no charges for this service; a dumpster is set up at Lot 5 which is located at 375 Yoder Avenue, just east of Home Depot in Avon.
