Ice skating returns to Nottingham Lake

After a one-year hiatus due to above average temperatures and less than ideal weather conditions, Nottingham Lake is open for ice skating. The ice is only available contingent upon weather and ice rink conditions.

The Town is planning to operate the ice rink through February but dates and hours may be adjusted based on staffing, weather or ice conditions. The Recreation Department manages the ice rink and provides skate rentals and concessions out of the Metcalf Cabin in Harry A. Nottingham Park. Community members and visitors with their own skates can enjoy use of the Nottingham Lake ice rink for free but are required to sign a liability waiver. Skaters can enjoy hot cocoa, s’mores, fire pits, music, seasonal lighting and beautiful views!

The ice rink is open Monday through Friday, 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. The hours of operation are subject to change based on staffing, weather and ice quality. An Open skate section and recreational hockey area will be available daily. “Box hockey” goals will be provided on the west end of the ice rink, running north and south. In mid-January, the Recreation Department will also plan to offer select ice programs such as Learn to Skate, Drop-In Hockey and Drop-In Tea Kettle Curling.

Updates on ice rink status, operations or programs can be found online at AvonRec.org, Avon Recreation’s social media pages or by calling the Recreation Center front desk at 970-748-4060.

Free Christmas Tree Recycling Offered to Avon Residents

Town of Avon residents may leave their undecorated Christmas tree curbside for pick up and recycling by Avon Public Operations Department

The Town of Avon will offer curbside Christmas tree pick-up for Avon residents from December 26, 2022 through February 3, 2023. The Avon Public Operations Department will pick up your tree free of charge if you simply place it curbside. All trees must have their lights, tinsel and ornaments removed. The town will only pick up cut trees; artificial or flocked trees, wreaths or seasonal debris will not be collected. No yard waste will be collected.

Avon residents can also drop cut trees off at the Public Operations site at 375 Yoder Avenue at the signed, designated spot. Avon's Public Operations Department will check for trees that are placed curbside on a frequent basis, but if residents would like to schedule a pick-up, they may call the Public Operations Department with their address and phone number.

For more information or to schedule a pick up, please contact Public Operations Manager Gary Padilla at 970-748-4118 or email [email protected].

Don’t Crowd the Plow

Important Safety Reminders from Avon Public Operations

Winter is here!  Avon snowplow operators want to remind everyone to drive and walk safely around Town. The plows are very large and often operate in poor weather conditions where visibility may be hampered.

We’re in a season of gathering with family and friends, so let’s practice the following safety tips during winter operations to ensure the holidays are happy.

Drivers:
-
Slow Down!

-Don’t follow too close, give snowplows room to maneuver.

Pedestrians:
-Look both ways before stepping out into the street.
-Wear bright or reflective clothing.  Have a light source (cell phone/flashlight) in low light or poor weather conditions. Have reflective gear for your dog.
-Cross at intersections and crosswalks.  Make eye contact with drivers and ensure the vehicle is yielding to you before stepping onto the street.
-Avoid walking along roadways with your dog and do not let them go unleashed.

Our mission is to get you to and from your destinations safely, so please be aware of your surroundings and “don’t crowd the plow."

Avon Road Multimodal Safety and Operational Assessment Seeking Feedback

The Town of Avon is conducting a multimodal safety and operational assessment of Avon Road.  Avon Road is a roadway through the center of town with a series of five roundabouts.  From feedback and accident reports, Avon Road has some speeding concerns and is regarded as not pedestrian friendly. Efforts have been made to improve pedestrian safety with the addition of  pedestrian crossing flags in 2020. In the summer of 2022, temporary restrictive delineators were added at the accident-prone Avon Road and Hurd Ln intersection to assess the effectiveness and operational impacts of adding a permanent restrictive median.

To learn more about the assessment and provide comments, please visit us at www.avon.org/avonrd. If you have any questions, please contact Public Works Director Eva Wilson at [email protected] or call 970-390-2014.
