This news item has been updated: permits will not be required for residents to use the Nahant Street Yard Waste site this weekend.

With the recent mild weather, lots of residents are out doing late-season lawn and gutter clean up, and Wakefield’s Public Works Department has extended the hours of the Nahant Street Yard Waste site (“the Pit”) through the weekend.  The facility will be open Saturday, December 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, December 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The permit requirement will be waived for residents during this extension weekend.

The site also features a corrugated cardboard drop-off service. The site’s disposal container is different than residential curbside recycling bins in that it will not be sent to a sorting facility; the container will be for corrugated cardboard only. Corrugated board contains the extra layer of fiber that zig-zags between the brown sheets, making it tougher to tear and sturdier for shipping. Please do not use this service for cereal boxes, shoeboxes, pizza boxes, or other paper products. A load free of contamination will allow the Town to sell the cardboard and cover the costs of the service.

Those taking advantage of the disposal service should only bring dry, flattened corrugated cardboard that is free of Styrofoam, peanuts, plastic wrap, or bubble wrap. Tape and labels on a box are acceptable, though it should be free from oil and grease. The cardboard service is available to residents during the site’s open hours.
