Trump Tax Watch: Working Illinoisans Will Feel the Brunt of His Bad Economic Policies

Government and Politics

It’s not even his third week in office and Trump’s lies are already costing Illinoisans.

Chicago, IL - As Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Chinese imports-a policy that will increase prices across the board and hit working families the hardest-the Democratic Party of Illinois released the following statement:

“It’s not even his third week in office and Trump’s lies are already costing Illinoisans-breaking his empty campaign promises to lower prices. Trump’s tariffs are a tax on working families that will raise prices, hurt Illinois businesses, and destroy jobs. Illinois Democrats are sounding the alarm to stop this Administration from decimating the wallets of Illinois’ working families and small businesses.”

Trump isn’t going to make corporate power players pay for his tariff policies-working families and small businesses will.

  • Trump himself admitted his policies will cause “pain” for working families and he “can’t guarantee” his reckless plans won’t jack up costs.

  • In a month, working families may also face continued hardship under ill-advised tariffs against Canada and Mexico:

    • Capitol News Illinois: Trump tariffs could impact hundreds of billions of dollars of trade in Illinois:
      • President Donald Trump’s plan to implement tariffs on key United States trading partners could affect more than $100 billion worth of goods imported to Illinois from Canada, Mexico and China.
      • Illinois is highly dependent on oil and gas from Canada, meaning consumers could be in line for higher energy and gas prices. About 72% of Illinois’ imports, or $47.4 billion, from Canada in 2023 was oil and gas, according to DCEO.
