Henry VIII wrestles with his legacy in this thrilling human drama. With no male heir, he considers whether he should defy the Church and seek a divorce from his wife, Katherine of Aragon. Is God punishing Henry for having married his brother’s widow? He seeks guidance from his advisor Cardinal Wolsey, who may or may not have his best interests at heart. The consequences will send shockwaves across a continent and change England forever. Nearly thirty years since last performed at the Festival, Henry VIII is the final installment of Shakespeare’s history plays.

Set on the last night of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life, The Mountaintop transports us to the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where King confronts his legacy and mortality. As he prepares his speech for the following day, he orders a cup of coffee, and the hotel maid who arrives turns out to be more than he ever expected. Although fictional, the play propels us to better understand the human being behind the icon of the Civil Rights Movement.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

As part of the Festival’s artist exchange program with London’s famed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), their students will present a touring production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, July 30-August 3, 2024. The emphasis is on the art of contemporary Shakespeare performance and training from the Bard’s homeland.
