What does it mean to be part of a community? How can we forge meaningful connections with each other and the place we call home? Using a beautiful, screen-printed tent as a gathering place, artists Elizabeth Jabar and Colleen Kinsella brought artists and community members of all ages together to explore these questions through a series of collaborative workshops and conversations during the summer of 2022. Featuring an array of prints, written works, and portraits, this exhibition represents the individual and collective stories gathered throughout the process and provides a glimpse of the shared hopes, dreams, and ideas for Waterville.

This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Maine Arts Commission and realized in partnership with the Colby College Museum of Art and its Lunder Institute for American Art.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET

Maine Film Center

93 Main St, Waterville

Saturday, December 17

1:00 p.m.

FREE

According to its original 1947 New York Times review, Miracle on 34th Street is "the freshest little picture in a long time." Macy's department store, the epicenter of the holiday shopping season, hires a man who calls himself Kris Kringle to be their Santa Claus. Is he the real deal, or should he be confined by the state for his own mental health? Played by Edmund Gwenn, Kris Kringle sets out to change the hearts and minds of New York City, and specifically, a little girl whose mother (Maureen O'Hara) has taught her that Santa Claus is not real. This warm-hearted film pushes back against American consumerism, asking what we gain from our tireless pursuit of proof.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

Maine Film Center

93 Main St, Waterville

Saturday, December 17

1:00 p.m.

FREE

A forever classic, Fiddler on the Roof is set in 20th-century pre-revolutionary Russia where Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman, is deadset on marrying his three daughters off in respectable matches. However, when each of them expresses different romantic leanings, he has to contend with the collision of tradition and uncomfortable change. The family has to navigate all of this in the face of the deadly anti-Jewish pogroms enacted by the Russian military. Interspersed with musical numbers that have pervaded our culture ("If I Were A Rich Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker"), this film is a perfect holiday watch.

Callbacks on Wednesday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m.

Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, The Play That Goes Wrong is a play-within-a-play that follows the Cornley Drama Society’s production of the 1920’s whodunit, “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” Despite their best efforts, the production rapidly goes from bad to disastrous, with madcap mishaps and choreographed chaos—from an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, a self-destructing set, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences!
