It’s 1885 in rural France. Peerless cook Eugenie (the nonpareil Juliette Binoche) has worked for the famous gourmet Dodin (Benoît Magimel) for the last 20 years. As time went by, the practice of gastronomy and mutual admiration turned into a romantic relationship. Their association gives rise to dishes, each one more delicious than the last, that confound even the world’s most illustrious chefs. But Eugenie is fond of her freedom and has never wanted to marry Dodin. So, he decides to do something he has never done before: cook for her.

Part of CINEMA EXPLORATIONS, a wintertime community-curated film series.

Between Two Worlds features Juliette Binoche and is adapted from Florence Aubenas' bestselling nonfiction work Le Quai de Ouistreham (The Night Cleaner). Binoche poses as Marianne, a deserted wife who joins the workforce as a cleaner, performing hard work at an unforgiving pace for low pay in homes, hotels, businesses, and even on ferries that course the high seas. She takes all she has seen and the stories she’s been told to create an exposé of exploitation. Lauded by readers and critics, she rationalizes her deception of her co-workers as being necessary for a greater good. But how do these women really feel about Marianne, who had been a friend and confidante?

It’s a little over 2,000 miles from Compton to Nashville, but drop the needle on Keb’ Mo’s captivating new album, Good To Be, and you can make the trip in a cool three-and-a-half-minutes flat. “I’ve lived in Nashville for the last eleven years,” says Keb’, “but Compton has always been my home. Finding a way to connect those two places on this album was a powerful thing for me. It felt like something I needed to do.”

Written partially in Nashville and partially in the Compton house Keb’ grew up in, Good To Be is a celebration of roots and resilience, of growth and gratitude, of hope and memory. The songs here draw on country, soul, and blues to forge a sound that transcends genre and geography, weaving together past and present into a heartwarming tapestry spanning more than forty years of sonic evolution.

This performance follows a week-long session of theatre camp.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre presents Jack and the Beanstalk, an original adaptation of the classic children’s story. What happens when a young boy plants Wonder Beans in his own backyard? For Jack, it is the beginning of a great adventure. With a little help from P.T. Wonder and a Giant, Jack learns a valuable lesson about true happiness. This musical production also features a host of other characters, including the Elegant Harp, Jill, Mother, Milky White, the Farmers, the Merchants, the Circus Performers and the Wonder Beans.

Waterville Moves is a bi-weekly series that invites you to move your body, share stories, and create connections through guided movements and dance making. Each class is 45 minutes to an hour long, and can be taken as a series or a single workshop. Classes are free and open to all: no experience with dance needed.

2024 Oscar Nominee: Best International Feature Film!

Nothing in all of Wim Wenders’ incredible filmography—which includes Wings of Desire, Paris Texas, Buena Vista Social Club, Until the End of the World, The American Friend, and Anselm (coming very soon to the Maine Film Center)—is really like Perfect Days, but then nothing anybody has ever made is quite like it. Hirayama (Kôji Yakusho, winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Actor award for his work here) is content with his simple life cleaning toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his structured routine he cherishes music on cassette tapes (which we get to share with him in one of the best soundtracks ever assembled), books, and taking photos of trees. Unexpected encounters reveal more of his story in a deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the world around us.
