AN EVENING WITH BRANDY CLARK & HAYES CARLL

Waterville Opera House

1 Common St, Waterville

March 17

8pm

Tickets: $39–$49

Eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund

Brandy Clark is one of her generation's most esteemed songwriters and musicians. In the midst of yet another landmark year, Clark released her widely acclaimed self-titled album this past spring and has just won her first Grammy Award.

The country simplicity that imbues Hayes Carll’s songs can sometimes hide the social conscience and sharp humor that also runs through them, but if you want to find those things, they are there. He makes us laugh––but then he makes us cry.

The American Society of Magical Negroes is a deftly observant fantasy comedy that stays true to its own irreverence”–Owen Gleiberman, Variety. It’s a fresh, satirical comedy inspired by the "magical negro" cinematic trope popularized in American cinema and television throughout the 20th century and first named and criticized by filmmaker Spike Lee. Flipping the trope on its head, The American Society of Magical Negroes follows a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people more comfortable. Although initially enamored with his new powers, Aren begins to question the value of using supernatural means to do the very thing he's felt obligated to do his whole life.

Supplied a job by Lou’s gun-running father (MIFF Midlife Achievement Award winner Ed Harris) and grimy brother-in-law JJ (Dave Franco), Jackie is quickly entangled in a deep web of crime and violence, and the only way to protect her love is to fight back–and fight back she does. A smash hit at Sundance 2024, Love Lies Bleeding is an adrenaline-fueled, steroid-pumping film that’s “unabashedly queer and winningly deranged”–Slashfilm.com. “It’s a brutal, bloody, and discombobulating ride, but boy, is it a blast”–Entertainment Weekly.

Folk to Folk Rock Royalty

This family will break generational barriers and join us for one amazing night together. Two rockin' sons with the father of folk, and three great songwriters.

Singer-songwriter David Mallett is one of America’s true original troubadours. In a career spanning four decades, he has recorded 17 albums, had several hundred covers of his songs, and performed in clubs, concert halls and festivals across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

The Mallett Brothers/Duo Luke and Will are strong songwriters with a country alt edge. Theirs is a musical melting pot that's influenced equally by the singer/songwriter tradition as by harder rock, classic country, and psychedelic sounds.
