Weekly Roundup: State of the Races - 25 Days Out

Government and Politics

October 11, 2024

Michigan Dems are out in every community to highlight the stakes of this year’s election at every level of the ballot, while Trump, Vance, and MIGOP are all talk

LANSING — As we get closer and closer to the general election, Michigan Dems are working day in and day out to energize voters, talk to folks in our communities, and remind them of the importance of electing Democrats from the top to the bottom of the ticket. From the state Supreme Court to the presidency, it is more important than ever that voters reject the dangerous MAGA extremism of Donald Trump and the MIGOP to protect our rights, our jobs, and our democracy.

As a battleground state, Michigan has stayed at the center of this election, with visits from J.D. Vance, Donald Trump, and Tim Walz this week. Mike Rogers’ was once again in hot water as the Detroit Free Press exposed that he still does not live in Michigan — despite claims otherwise. In the Michigan 7th, Curtis Hertel Jr. is fighting to protect Mid-Michiganders’ rights, their jobs, and their community from extremist Tom Barrett.

In the 27th state House district, Representative Jamie Churches is facing Charlie Kirk protégé and Turning Point USA extremist Rylee Linting. Trump’s ugly extremism has pervaded every level of the MIGOP and is threatening Michiganders and the issues they care about most.

Check out the state of the race up and down the ballot:

Presidential:

This week, in his visit on Tuesday, the Detroit News reported that J.D. Vance once again insulted Michiganders and threatened auto jobs calling the grant to protect 650 auto jobs “table scraps.” Just like in Trump’s first term, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes knows that Trump and Vance’s Project 2025 agenda would only help the wealthiest 1% while leaving hard-working Michiganders struggling to pay bills:

Detroit News: JD Vance criticizes $500M grant for EV project in Michigan as ‘table scraps’

  • Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance campaigned Tuesday in Detroit, where he described $500 million that the federal government is providing to convert a General Motors plant in Michigan for electric vehicles as “table scraps” compared with larger job losses he contends could be on the horizon…

  • “Major investments in Michigan auto jobs made possible by Vice President Harris aren’t ‘table scraps,’ they’re a lifeline that is building the future of American manufacturing,” Costello said in a statement. “JD Vance and Donald Trump are out of touch with Michigan, and it’s obvious when you see them threatening to abandon Michigan workers and cede the future of manufacturing to China.”

In his visit, besides spreading extremist nonsense, Trump didn’t forget to insult Detroit and the city’s history of putting this country on wheels and building the middle class. With lower crime rates, a rising population, and the Tigers headed to the playoffs, Chair Barnes made sure to remind Trump who Detroit really is — and that Michiganders and Detroiters alike will not forget his disrespect this November:

MSNBC‘Get out of here with that.’: Trump risks battleground backlash with more thoughtless remarks

Thankfully, Governor Walz visited on Oct 11th, to set the record straight and show Michiganders how the Harris-Walz campaign will protect our jobs and create more — without insulting the largest city in our state. Along with Vice President Harris, Walz will lower costs and raise wages for working families across the state:

Senate:

This week, after lying for months about where he lives, Mike Rogers finally admitted he does not live in the house that he claimed he did. His house isn’t finished enough for Rogers to live in, so it still begs the question, where is Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood? And, if Michiganders can’t trust him to be truthful about this, can they trust him about anything:

Gongwer: Rogers Residency Question Raised One Again

  • On Sunday, a Detroit Free Press reported that Rogers’ home in White Lake does not have a certificate of occupancy, despite being the location of his voter registration since July. The story also raised the issue of whether Rogers may have violated election law by using that address for voting purposes…

  • “After he abandoned Michigan to walk through the revolving door at the expense of Michiganders, Mike Rogers is back to run for Senate, but he has been lying about where he lives,” Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Sam Chan said in a statement. “Rogers is trying to fool voters, and his campaign owes Michiganders answers about where he actually lives.”

Congressional Race:

In the race for the US House, former state Senators Curtis Hertel Jr. and Tom Barrett are facing off in the 7th district — Barrett’s second attempt to sway Michiganders with his dangerous, extremist rhetoric. While Hertel promises to stand for Michiganders’ rights and jobs, Barrett pushes lies to scare voters:

Michigan Advance: In Mid-Michigan congressional race, Hertel and Barrett center pitches around the middle class

  • On the Democratic side, former State Sen. Curtis Hertel (D-East Lansing) is campaigning on issues like reproductive rights, gun safety, lowering health care costs and supporting jobs in automotive and battery manufacturing…

  • He noted his support for an incentive program which supported General Motors’ nearly $7 billion plan to expand electric vehicles and battery production in the state, creating 4,000 jobs and retaining 1,000. As part of its plan, GM and partner L.G. Energy solutions also secured a $2.5 billion loan from the U.S. Energy Department for multiple battery manufacturing sites, including one near GM’s Delta Twp. plant.

State House:

This year, dangerous, far-right candidate and Charlie Kirk protégée Ryle Linting is running to unseat state Rep. Jamie Churches, a champion for the middle class who has delivered for her district on the issues they care about most — instead of pushing an unpopular MAGA agenda at them. Over the past two years, Michigan Dems in the state House have passed historic legislation to protect reproductive rights, support Michigan students, and lower costs. If elected, Linting could block all future progress while dragging Michiganders back decades:

Detroit News: Democrats, GOP eye Downriver seats in fight to control Michigan House

  • In the 27th House District, Democratic state Rep. Jaime Churches is in a tough reelection race against GOP challenger Rylee Linting…

  • Churches has attacked Linting in ads that criticize Linting’s stance on abortion, arguing she is “completely committed to banning abortion even for survivors of rape and incest.” The ad cites Linting’s endorsement from Right to Life of Michigan, whose endorsement criteria prohibits candidates from supporting any abortion exemption except the life of the mother.
