From: Norwalk Hospital

It was closing time at The Kitchen Table, the farm-to-table restaurant in Pound Ridge, NY that Daphne Everett and her husband, Robbie, have owned for 40 years. Feeling lightheaded, Daphne decided to head home – Robbie following just to make sure she made it home OK.

Once at home Daphne took Wallace, their 160-pound Newfoundland, outside. Suddenly, the entire right side of her body stopped functioning.

“Luckily, I didn’t fall and was able to sit on a bench in the entryway and then roll onto the floor. Wallace laid down next to me and that’s where Robbie found us.”

Robbie is in the Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps and recognized that Daphne was likely having a stroke. He immediately called 9-1-1. The ambulance arrived quickly, and EMS rushed Daphne to Norwalk Hospital.

Awaiting her arrival at Norwalk was the rapid response team, a specialized group of caregivers trained in stroke evaluation and care.

After running some tests, the stroke care team, confirmed Daphne had a massive ischemic stroke and would require emergency surgery. Neurosurgeon Dr. Joshua Marcus was on the scene and ready to perform a mechanical thrombectomy to treat the stroke.

“The next thing I remember was waking up with the neurosurgery team surrounding me. When they asked me how I was, I raised my right arm, fist-pumped and said ‘I’m good’ clearly. They all cheered and high-fived each other!”

In reflecting on this life-changing experience, both Robbie and Daphne are thankful for the care team members, and for the compassion and personal touch.

The support of our donors gives us hope and allows us to help people like Daphne.
