Scott Called it an “Honor” to Launch Project 2025 and Praised Its Leaders

Last week, a series of new stories have revealed that Rick Scott is fully behind Project 2025, including its plan to ban abortion nationwide and terminate the National Flood Insurance Program that insures 1.7 million Florida homes. The leaders of Project 2025 have also endorsed Scott’s signature plan to raise taxes on middle class families, and end Social Security and Medicare as we know them.

• Scott called it his “honor” to join the Project 2025 launch and praised the group’s efforts.

• During the opening of the event, Trump-endorsed GOP Senator Rick Scott, in a letter read to those in attendance, called it an “honor” to join the group for the launch of Project 2025, which was initially called the “Presidential Transition Project,” and praised the effort as promoting freedom: 

• Rick Scott has spoken and planned with the Heritage Foundation to implement their policy agenda for years. He has links to individuals who work with Project 2025.

• Florida’s junior US senator has consistently shown his support for the far-right proposal that aims to reshape the United States government. Critics warn that it could unleash an authoritarian regime.

• Scott is close with Kevin Roberts, president of The Heritage Foundation, the far-right organization behind Project 2025, and has repeatedly endorsed many of the group’s proposals.

• Scott has praised and collaborated with the Heritage Foundation and shares many of its priorities, including terminating the National Flood Insurance Program that insures 1.7 million Florida homes, a state plagued by skyrocketing property insurance costs.

• A longtime foe of Roe v. Wade who voted against IVF, Scott supports Florida’s current extreme 6-week abortion ban. And while Project 2025 doesn’t explicitly call for an abortion ban, it would take several steps to restrict the procedure, including barring federal funds being used to provide healthcare coverage for abortion, and requiring states to report all abortions that take place there to the federal government.

• Like Project 2025, Scott’s tax plan proposes that lower-earners pay more taxes.

• Last but not least, Project 2025 would make significant cuts to Medicaid and impose work requirements to receive coverage, as well as reform Medicare—including by making Medicare Advantage, a paid supplement to Medicare, the default option for patients.

• Scott has appeared on Roberts’ podcast to criticize investigations into Trump, and Roberts has praised Scott’s plan for fighting “woke extremism.” It’s no wonder why: With its nationwide ban on abortion, plan to replace public education with a voucher scheme, and of course “keeping men out of women’s sports” talking point, Scott’s 12-point agenda (which actually includes over 100 policy proposals) contains a lot of the same ideas as Project 2025.

• When he was governor of Florida, Scott hired the author of Project 2025’s chapter on election reform, attorney Hans von Spakovsky, to help conduct a purge of Florida’s voter rolls. 

• Two years ago, Scott and Roberts were side by side to promote Scott’s “plan for rescuing America.”
