Summer Learning and Fun with Windsor Historical Society

Summer is a great time to learn about our state’s rich history in lots of engaging ways!  Windsor Historical Society offers a diverse array of summer programs for all ages and interests, including:

Exploring Windsor’s Black History Lunch Conversations: Housing in Windsor. Wednesday, June 28, Noon to 1:30 PM. Join Historical Society researchers and staff for a stimulating in-person discussion focused on the stories of Windsor’s Black residents. Bring your own lunch, drinks provided. Free, but registration required.

Revolutionary Kids! Hands-on Learning for Ages 8-12. Saturday, June 24, 11 AM to 12:30 PM. Learn drill formations, how to pitch a soldier’s tent, and identify the gear a Patriot would carry in their haversack during the Revolutionary War. $5, registration required.

Secrets and Spies in Revolutionary CT with Liz Burke. Thursday, July 13, 7 to 8:30 PM. Learn how spies helped the Patriot, and sometimes the British, causes during the American Revolution. $5, registration required.

Walking Tour: From Meadow to Medicine, Saturday, July 22, 11 AM to noon. Meet at WHS to join horticulturist Gordon Kenneson for an amble along North Meadow Road and the edge of the Farmington River, learn about plants used in 18^th-century medicine, and conclude at Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee’s apothecary. $5, registration required.

Sarah Margu: A Child of the Amistad, with Tammy Denease. Saturday, August 5, 1 to 2 PM. Living history educator Tammy Denease portrays Sarah Margu, who was stolen from Africa as a child and enslaved, but eventually gained her freedom, becoming the first African to graduate from college in America. $10, registration required.

Windsor Music Series Continues with Low Ceilings Outdoor Concert. Saturday, August 19, 1 to 3 PM. Join friends and neighbors on the museum lawn for a lively outdoor show with local musicians of Low Ceilings and their “folky, alternative rock with a progressive tilt.” $10, Rain date: Sunday, August 20.

The Windsor Historical Society, founded in 1921, invites visitors to explore the people, places, and events that have shaped Windsor for over four centuries. The Society’s museum and research library is located at 96 Palisado Avenue (Route 159) and is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. General admission to the library and historic houses is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and free to children under 12 and WHS members. Visitors are free to browse the museum store and exhibit galleries at no charge, thanks to generous support of the Town of Windsor.
