Newark Library, a branch of the Alameda County Library, serves the 43,753 residents of the City of Newark. The County Library serves a population of over 523,000 in the cities of Albany, Dublin, Fremont, Newark, Union City, and the unincorporated areas of Castro Valley, and San Lorenzo. The City of Newark  enhances service by contributing funds for additional library open hours. The dynamic Newark Library League, led by President Mary Hammock and Vice President Karen Bridges, raises funds and promotes the Library

The Newark Library is located at the far end of the Civic Center complex, off Newark Blvd., just south of Thornton Ave. The 15,000 sq. ft. Newark Library was designed by architect Aaron Green and opened to the public in 1983. The design includes special areas for preschoolers, school age children, teens, adults and seniors. The library has over 74,095 items, including books, magazines, newspapers, DVD and VHS videos, CDs, CD-ROMs and books on CD and on cassette.
