Alkire Road Church of Christ

On Sunday, September 24, 1961, thirty-one Christians and their children began meeting for worship services at the John Burroughs School. This marked the beginning of a new congregation of the Lord's church.

In January 1963, a former theater building was purchased and remodeled. The first worship service in this new facility began on Sunday, June 2, 1963. The congregation became known as the Sullivant Avenue church of Christ.

In July 1968, a young man from Warren, Ohio – Emanuel B. Daugherty – became the first located preacher. He and his family were to stay with the congregation for the next 20 years.

In 1976, the church sold the Sullivant Avenue building. Property was purchased on Alkire Road, and ground breaking ceremonies for the new building were held in March 1977. Six months later, on August 29, 1977, we held our first worship services in the new building with 208 people present.

In September 1981, elders were appointed to oversee the work.

In 1989, Emanuel Daughtery and his wife left the work at Alkire Road.

In January of 1989, William Renner began preaching for the Alkire Road congregation. In 1993, William Renner left the work at Alkire Road.

In 1993, the current puplit minister – Mark Bass – along with his wife, Joanne, and children, Bonnie and Michael, moved from Metropolis, Illinois to work with the Alkire Road congregation.

In January 2001, Trevor Major began work as the associate minister, and in 2004 became the director of the Central Ohio Bible Institute – a ministry of the Akire Road church of Christ.
