We are the State Headquarters of The American Legion. Chartered by Congress in 1919, The American Legion was founded as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. We are a community-service organization which now numbers over 156,000 members in Illinois, in over 800 local Posts. These Posts are organized into Divisions, Districts and Counties. Each Division, District and County has officers who provide leadership in their respective areas. In addition to these officers, we elect or appoint a number of state-level officers and committee chairmen each year to conduct the programs of The American Legion.
The state headquarters is located at 2720 E. Lincoln St., in Bloomington, Illinois , with additional offices in Chicago. In addition to thousands of volunteers serving in leadership and program roles in local communities, the state headquarters has a regular staff of about 12 employees.
