Our mission is to provide the youth of the Fox Valley area with an opportunity to enhance track skills and build character through competition. We will teach our athletes the necessary skills to participate in track & field events on a competitive level. We will create an environment, which will foster personal growth and will help them to become more productive citizens.
Coached by Wilbert Walters who founded the club in 1968; his goal was to provide opportunities for Aurora's youth. The club's original emphasis was on drama, not track. The drama troupe performed at churches, retirement homes and the boy's youth home in St. Charles. Eventually the founder and Head Coach, Mr. Wilbert Walters, formed a track club and started teaching track and field skills. The Aurora Sundowners Track Club is now a force to be reckoned with. Coach Walters has been the strong stay of the organization, since founding it over 37 years ago. He is a 73-year-old retired High School coach and Educator who has devoted over 33 years to helping under-privilege kids develop track skills as well as life-coping skills. Since its inception, our club roster has grown to approximately 60 athletes whose age's range from 5 to 18 years old. 30 to 50% of our athletes have competed in several AAU Junior Olympic Games.
The Aurora Sundowners is a non-profit organization and all of its support is realized through corporate sponsorship and our own self-help efforts.
