Benson Elementary School will provide a safe, caring environment that addresses the diverse needs of all students and promotes individual growth. Through collaboration with parents and community, high expectations and an emphasis on learning will motivate students to become productive, successful citizens. By the end of the 2009-2010 school year, a highly qualified staff at Benson Elementary will ensure that our students reach 97% academic proficiency.

Benson Elementary has recognized over the last five years the need to “build bridges” to foster a better understanding of the various cultures that represent the school’s population. Now that we have a better understanding of these differences, the attention has now shifted to a commitment on academic excellence. The staff realizes that student’s academic gains have been small in nature and that gaps still persist between our subgroups.

To better address deficiencies, it was important for the staff to revisit the mission and vision for the next five years. You will see below that both statements below. Not only will our instructional strategies be the focus, but student results as well. Benson Elementary is committed to ensuring its students meet the academic gains identified under The No Child Left Behind legislation.

As such, the school’s focus has shifted to goal setting and benchmarking for each grade level. Each grade level has committed to meeting an academic proficiency benchmark by the end of the each year. Consequently, grade levels have also established quarterly benchmarks to help identify any areas that need to take the necessary remedial action to meet the identified yearly goals.
