History and Mission:
The Tango Society of Boston was founded in June, 1997 as a non-profit volunteer-run organization dedicated to the support and growth of the Argentine Tango in the Boston area. Since then we have grown to over 4000 members with more than 20 countries represented including nations such as India, Russia and Bhutan.
From the beginning we have focused on bringing the best of authentic Argentine Tango to Boston, including bringing some of the best teachers on Broadway and in the world to teach classes and workshops. We hold workshops on the 3rd weekend of each month in conjunction with a Milonga (dance) and always with an exhibition by the Master teachers. We also run our successful Wednesday Tango Break in which we have two classes and then our "practica" (practice). All our events are organized and run by volunteers from our community.
In addition to planning events such as those described above, the Tango Society of Boston has an artistic component. We have co-produced events with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, WGBH Public Television, and the Boston Public Library, to name a few. We have also participated in "First Night Boston" and we were honored to be part of the first Dance Across the City event in January 2004. Also, we co-sponsored and participated in "Waterfire" in Providence, RI. In addition to dance instruction and planning milonga dances, the Society has sponsored cultural events in conjunction with the Harvard Film Archives, the Coolidge Corner Theatre and World Music.
