The Mission of the Brighter Choice Charter Schools (BCCS) is to ensure that BCCS students have the same opportunities for future success as students attending the best public schools in the region. There are three significant components to achieving this mission:
-Exemplary instruction that ensures competency and mastery in reading, writing and mathematics.
-Focus on the development of social, behavioral, and organization skills necessary for future school success.
-An education beyond the basics that includes: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Sciences, and History.
About Us
The companion Brighter Choice Charter Schools -- the Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls and the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys -- provides a new model for urban elementary education, one that joins high academic standards, a nurturing and structured environment, and heightened accountability.
The charter schools, located at 250 Central Avenue in Albany, New York, serve inner-city children and offer Kindergarten through 4th grade.
The Brighter Choice Charter Schools were proposed by a coalition of Albany parents, educators, and civic and business leaders in response to the continuing poor performance of many of Albany's existing public schools. In a survey by Zogby International, more than 70 percent of parents with children enrolled in Albany public schools said they would consider switching their children to a school with the features of the Brighter Choice Charter Schools. In early 2002, over 250 families applied for the 90 initial spots.
New York's charter school law was adopted to encourage innovation and expand the choice available within a public school setting. The Brighter Choice Charter Schools, with the unique combination of the above features, are unlike any other public school in the nation.
