Calvary Chapel is a non-denominational, Bible-believing fellowship of Christians who seek to serve their local community and the world. We started in 1964 as a home Bible study of believers. Many of the original members had left the "main-line denominations" because their churches were no longer taking a firm stand for the inerrancy of Scripture, the person and work of Jesus Christ, and salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ. Pastor Henry Hudson became the first pastor of Calvary Chapel, and through his leadership the fellowship grew through evangelism and a strong emphasis on Bible teaching. It was during his pastorate that the congregation came to believe a pre-millennial, dispensational understanding of the Scripture.
The church acquired its first building on 8th Street in downtown Massillon in 1965. The fast growing church purchased land in Jackson Township in 1969 and built its new facility in 1970. More growth prompted an extension of the building in 1976. Pastor Jeff Sanders has been the pastor since 1994, and in the past five years the church's attendance has tripled through the continued emphasis on evangelism and teaching the Word of God according to the revelation of Jesus Christ given to and through the apostle Paul.
Our congregation is certainly one of the friendliest you will ever meet. If you are a first time visitor, you will not be a "stranger" for long. Our worship service is a mix of mostly traditional hymns with a blend of some contemporary music from our choir or soloists. Pastor Jeff gives a children's message to the kindergarteners and primary age kids in the middle of the service, and afterwards they are all dismissed to children's church. Pastor Jeff's message in the worship service is usually a 40-minute verse-by-verse exposition of a passage of Scripture, loaded with practical application for the believer and non-believer alike. We are pretty casual here. Some people like to dress up for church, some just wear jeans and T-shirts--it doesn't matter to us. Come as you are! We just want you to be here and enjoy the fellowship with people who know where God is taking them!
