Castlemont was founded in 1929. The original building was built in medieval style, so the first class of students to enter its halls adopted the names and traditions of the age of Knights and castles. Most important, they adopted its ideals and its chivalry.

Chivalry was the code of the knight. It commanded him to be fearless, loyal to his feudal lord; to obey and defend the church, to feed and clothe the poor, to fight to death for justice and always be true to his promised word.

The legendary King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, the most courageous and chivalrous knights in Britain, personified the ideal at which all young fighters aimed. King Arthur proved right for the throne of Britain and his right to lead these great men by pulling the magic sword, Excalibur out of a rock in which it was embedded. Merlin, who made the table round because all Knights were equal, provided the table at which the Knights sat.

All this is present somewhere in Castlemont’s traditions and you, new and continuing students. You have an invested interest in the traditions of Castlemont High School. Perhaps you hope to enter Castle politics to serve on the Class Council, the Round Table, which is the legislative body of our school. You may join our Knights and Crusaders when they go to battle on the sports field as their predecessors did. Or, you may sit in the stands, watch, and support our present day ladies in waiting, the Castlemont Cheerleaders and Lady Knights. The old town crier lives again as your school newspaper, Ye Castle Crier. All of these traditions and ideals are captured forever in your yearbook, named the “Falcon”.

Whether you are destined to be student body president or just a plain “good average student,” wear the royal colors of purple and white proudly. Always remember Castlemont’s motto: “Build on and make thy castles high and fair, rising upward to the skies.”
