The mission of the Oakland Township Parks and Recreation Commission is to acquire, maintain and manage township parkland and natural areas and to provide recreational opportunities and facilities for the benefit and enjoyment of all present and future Oakland Township residents.
Goals:
To identify, preserve, maintain and enhance critical natural resource areas and habitats within the Township as components of our Township park system.
To acquire, plan, develop and maintain parklands and facilities for both passive and active recreation in keeping with the desires of the residents and with the natural resources of the Township.
To locate major parks, neighborhood parks and facilities so as to be accessible to all residents and provide everyday recreational opportunities to all residents.
To facilitate the planning and implementation of the Township-wide network of safety paths and other trails for pedestrian and bicycle access to community destinations.
To incorporate the preferences of Township residents for park facilities and recreational opportunities into appropriate plans and objectives.
To consider the impact on park neighbors in designing and locating park and recreational facilities.
To design facilities with flexibility so as to accommodate changes in technology, social groupings and personal preferences.
To provide facilities that are readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities as the Townships parks are developed.
To provide environmental education, park interpretive services and recreation programming for Township citizens.
To coordinate with other Township efforts to guide local community growth.
To encourage private as well as public efforts to implement open space and recreation in the community.
To coordinate with programs and plans of other regional parks and recreational agencies, including local school districts.
To improve communication with the public through a variety of media.
To provide good value in parks and recreation for Oakland Township residents and encourage their continuing support for park funding.
