City Of Bainbridge Island

280 Madison Avenue
206-842-7633

Located 35 minutes from Seattle by Ferry, Bainbridge Island offers a vibrant, diverse community, rich in history, culture and natural beauty.

A recent survey of Community Values revealed that, while the Island's population is growing (the current population numbers 22,000), residents are committed to preserving the Island's sense of community and its green spaces - agricultural land, forests, parks and trails. Islanders value the sense of country living, the friendly, small-town business community, and quick access to Seattle's business and cultural resources.

The City began with the incorporation of the town of Winslow in 1947. In 1991, the city annexed the remainder of the Island, establishing the City of Bainbridge Island. The annexation allowed the city government to take full responsibility for providing dedicated services to the entire island.

As a non-charter code city under the Optional Municipal Code (RCW 35A), Bainbridge Island operates under a mayor-council form of government. The Mayor, head of the city government, is elected for a four-year term while the City Council's seven members are elected in non-partisan elections for four-year staggered terms.

The Bainbridge Island city government provides services in the areas of Public Works, Planning and Community Development, Finance, Municipal Court, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Police.

The City of Bainbridge Island encourages active participation by its residents in shaping policies which reflect the community's needs and values. Over 250 citizen volunteers participate in Commissions and Committees which support City staff in a variety of areas ranging from Open Space acquisition to the development of Non-motorized transportation alternatives.
