History:
The beginnings of Clinton as an organized community have been lost in a maze of local legends. The history can be traced back to 1864. It was agreed to name the town for Henry Clinton Young, a lawyer from Laurensville who helped design the layout of the first streets.
Recently, the late Mercer Silas Bailey, has been elected to the SC Business Hall of Fame. Mr. Bailey founded M.S.Bailey & Sons Bank and the Clinton Cotton Mill and was a leader in many other business and community developments. He was born in 1841 and died in 1926.
The Clinton Museum commission needs your help in preserving the heritage of the Clinton area by adding photographs, artifacts from everyday life, Clinton High School annuals, and other memorabilia to the permanent collection.
