Goodwater, Alabama
is a small town located in Coosa
County in the east-central portion of the state. It lies in the upper
northeast corner of the county, just a few miles northwest of Alexander
City. The county of Coosa was named for the Coosa River, which forms
the western boundary of the county. It is bordered by Shelby,
Talladega, Clay, Tallapoosa, Elmore and Chilton counties. The town of
Goodwater is the largest community in Coosa County - by size and
population. According to the United States Census Bureau, Goodwater has
a total area of 6.5 square miles and a population of approximately
5,000 residents. The entire population of Coosa County is only about
12,000 residents, which gives you an idea of the rural nature of the
area. The county seat of Coosa County is the tiny town of Rockford,
population 500. A very historical area, Coosa County was created in
1832 from lands ceded in the Creek Indian Treaty of Cusseta and also
from parts of Montgomery County. Explorer Hernando DeSoto was probably
the first white man to visit what is now the area of Goodwater and
Coosa County. Professional basketball player, Jamario Moon, (currently
playing for the NBA's Toronto Raptors,) is from Goodwater, Alabama.
