Coming of Age: North Texas

1155 Union Circle Drive #310919
940-369-8325

Coming of Age: North Texas serves Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties with programs designed to connect the highly valued skills of people age 50+ with the community, building the capacity of organizations.

Our mission is to strengthen communities through contributions of people age 50+.

Coming of Age: North Texas launched in September 2012 and is part of a growing national affiliation. Housed in Partnerships for Strong Communities in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of North Texas, Coming of Age: North Texas offers two experiential workshops that are designed to connect people age 50+ with encore opportunities.  Each distinct workshop provides a peer group setting wherein participants serve as consultants to each other.  This builds rapport, creates a shared pool of resources, and springboards fresh ideas.

The workshops are Explore Your Future, designed for people age 50+, and Capturing the Energy and Expertise of People 50+ (Learning Lab), designed for managers of volunteer resources.

Explore Your Future – interactive seminar for people 50+:

As individuals live longer, they have more opportunity to contribute time, talent, and treasure to their communities.  Many people age 50+ want to remain active, engage with others, and make a difference but often are not sure how to go about making that happen. Frequently, they do not find opportunities of interest or ones that capitalize on their expertise.  Meaning, purpose, and personal fulfillment take on added emphasis as individuals have an opportunity to reimagine their lives.

4 session workshop for individuals age 50+ to delve into meaningful life questions in a purposeful way:

  • What has influenced me?
  • Who am I now?
  • How can I realize my dreams?
  • How can I create an engaged life?

Capturing the Energy and Expertise of People 50+ (Learning Lab) – for volunteer managers:

In a time of dwindling resources, nonprofit organizations need the expertise of highly trained and qualified volunteers age 50+ to accomplish the mission of their organizations.  This capacity-building effort will take some new strategies, however, as people 50+ do not respond to the older and more traditional methods of volunteer engagement.  For example, recruitment techniques that have worked in the past with older adults do not always resonate with boomers.  Boomers are looking for more flexibility, teamwork, and meaning in their volunteer assignments.  New collaborative models and techniques are needed to engage this generation.

2-Day capacity building workshop for nonprofit executives and local government managers to learn how to:

  • Craft opportunities that fuse the agency’s mission with age 50+ interests
  • Develop high impact marketing to engage people 50+
  • Form teams to meet the organization’s most pressing needs
  • Cultivate, recruit, manage and retain volunteers
  • Create an action plan to grow the volunteer program
