Community Roots is a nonprofit partner of Healthy Communities Coalition that offers a plant nursery, farmers market with local family farmers, teen interships in managing school gardens and farmers markets, vocational rehabilitation for adults, and organizational direction for an annual toy drive. Community Roots has attracted some of the region's most energetic volunteers.
These volunteers work on many projects, including a nonprofit plant nursery, a 5 acre community garden on
River Road in Dayton, four organic school gardens in Dayton and others in nearby towns, a summer farmers market with teen internships, and community education in vegetable and
fruit canning at the Dayton High culinary arts kitchen. Community Roots efforts allow
more people to access nutritious food, to buy local, and to buy from local
farmers and increase local economic activity and economic stability. In
addition, many Community Roots volunteers are very involved with technical support,
implementation and expansion of the local school gardens and hoop house at each
school in Dayton, and with expanded opportunities for youth and adults to teach
and learn sustainable agriculture and gardening skills. In addition, the proceeds from Community Roots plant sales benefit the annual local toy drive.
