DeMotte Elementary's curriculum stresses the basics while providing for advanced students and those students with special needs. The curriculum is organized according to state guidelines. Cluster classes are offered for advanced students. Special needs are attended to through the STAR program, Chapter I, Learning Disability Class, and the Mildly Mentally Handicapped Class. The counselor maintains classroom programs, as well as small group sessions, parent classes, and individual counseling. Computers are used by all students in the school in both a classroom and lab setting.
The academic record of DeMotte Elementary School is excellent. Historically, the students have scored above national norms on standardized tests. Demotte Elementary has been an accredited member of the North Central Association since 1979. DeMotte Elementary was honored with the Award of Excellence by the North Central Association in 1985. A Certificate of Recognition for outstanding contribution to the education of Indiana elementary students was received by DeMotte Elementary for several years. Since 1990, DeMotte Elementary School received recognition from the Indiana Department of Education by receiving moneys in performance based awards. Award certificate attesting to improvement in Mathematics Proficiency and ISTEP Total Battery Scores was also received. In recognition of significant improvement in the ISTEP total battery score, DeMotte Elementary was the recipient of a School Improvement Award in November. In December of 1993, the school placed first in the state in the fifth grade division of the Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl.
