CSA boxes start with spring greens and herb mixes. Lettuce, spinach, orach, mustard greens, radish, and various sprouts. As the season progresses more variety is included such as broccoli, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, beans, peas, and more. We try to include something new in every box, sometimes that's a hollow stuffing tomato or maybe a new color or texture of lettuce. Get your shares early as we have to much more interest than we have energy to supply. Some shares will be labor only or half labor half cash.
East Idaho Organic began in 2008 as a 7 acre bare lot with no electricity complimented by rock hard soil which had only been used as horse pasture. Kevin Hardy and Dewayne Arave are the owners/growers. Organic methods are used but we believe certification is just for the big fish.
The first year we mostly grew in our back yards in town. At the farm: we tried to raise chickens, tilled some new growing beds and planted some fruit trees. This first year was marked by abundant idealism, new ideas, countless hours of research, and work....lots of work. Overall the first year was like any year in a new business, lots of input of time, money, energy, and faith with little to show for it. The chickens were all killed over night by some predator that of course found the one weakness in our coup.
The trees dried up faster than we could keep water to them (no electricity means buckets). We had frosts into JULY....how can you grow food with frosts in July??? The first year was sobering to say the least.
The second year was a different story all together. This year was marked by work, work, and more of the same. We started the spring with dedication. Building two greenhouses, announcing our CSA, tilling huge growing beds, digging ditches, shoveling manure, fixing the coup and getting more chickens, pigs, then more chickens, and more faith & idealism.
Production was amazing. We supplied a 15 member CSA with 15 weeks of fresh produce. What the CSA didn't get went to the local farmers market and Food Co-op. By the time frost came we found ourselves saddled with over 1/4 ton of tomatoes, hundreds of pounds of sweet peppers, eggplant, kale, Kohl Rabi, onions, mustard greens, Orach, spinach, lettuce and more.
