Mission Statement:
Federated Church of Wauconda. Our denominational affiliations allow us to participate with the greater church in national and international mission support. As faithful followers of Jesus Christ, we believe strongly in what Jesus said was the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)
We hope you will come and visit us and experience the warmth and love. We promise you will be welcomed and at the same time, your privacy will be respected. You will be free to introduce yourself if you wish, or remain as “quiet as a church mouse.” We believe you will find the worship here inspirational and meaningful in your life today. Give us a try!
About us:
The Federated Church of Wauconda has an interesting history. In 1838, Justus Bangs, the founder of Wauconda, started a Baptist Bible group, which grew into an active congregation. Methodists in the area did not have a church building right away and were serviced by circuit riders who visited on horseback from time to time.
Time went by, as time will, and the two groups thrived as separate congregations. Then, in 1928, the State of Illinois decided to build Route 176, which just happened to go right through the Methodist church building. So the Methodists and the Baptists got together and decided to move the Methodist church building across the road and attach it to the Baptist Church building. You can still see the two buildings today—the Baptist church faces the street and has white pillars, the Methodist church is perpendicular to the other building and has a steeple.
The congregations joined not only their buildings but also their congregations. In the beginning, they took turns holding services, then they worshiped together but sat on opposite sides of the aisle. Eventually, the barriers and labels became less important, and the two groups gradually became a united church.
Today, our congregation is a diverse community of faith meeting the spiritual and social needs of its members and friends. We offer a variety of programs such as Sunday School for children and adults, as well as active youth and women’s groups. We also have many social events through our Outreach Commission that support our commitment to spread God’s love outside the walls of our church.
