About Us:
First Baptist Church of Martin, organized in 1876, has experienced a long and varied ministry as it has grown with the city of Martin. Thirteen hearty souls met together on a Sunday in September to form a new church; three others joined by baptism, bringing the total charter membership to sixteen.
Twenty-six men have served as pastors of this great church. Among these have been such notable names as J.N. Hill and J.B. Moody, (after whom Hall-Moody Institutue was named) and I.N. Penick (who served the longest pastorate in the church's history). Dr. Penick led in the construction of the present auditorium, which was completed in 1905.
Seven additions have been made to the building. The most recent include a Wing for Children's Ministry, completed in 1957; an Adult Educational Wing, completed in 1986; and an Education Wing which includes a state-of-the-art Nursery Suite, Church Parlor and educational classrooms.
First Baptist continues to expand its ministries to reach people with the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and to nurture believers through worship and Bible study. The church has a fully graded Sunday School, specialized ministries to senior adults, single adults, college students, and youth, full graded programs in music and missions education; and an active, aggressive commitment to evangelize the unsaved and reclaim the unchurched. In addition, the church building houses the Christian Wee Learn Center, a fully-licensed preschool facility, and Iglesia Casa de Gozo, a Spanish-language congregation.
