First Church of Christ

OUR STORY:

The First Church of Christ has from its inception sought to be a congregation of “Christians Only” dedicated to bringing the gospel of Christ to the Grayson  community.  It was sometime during the Civil War, records are not exact, that “circuit riding preacher” Will Kibbey and his brother, Frank Kibbey, established several congregations including the Church in Grayson.

The first church building in Grayson was a “Union Church” which was located about 100 feet west of the the county courthouse.  This building was used by various denominations and was  probably the first meeting place for our congregation.  For a short time during the 1870’s, the congregation met in the courthouse building itself.

This building was razed and a new brick church building was constructed during 1914-1915.  It was in this building that we had the greatest Bible School attendance of our history with 489 present on “Go-to-Sunday-School-Day” in May of 1916.  Unfortunately this building burned to the ground on January 5, 1919, due to a furnace malfunction.

While meeting in temporary quarters, the congregation  wasted no time in beginning construction once again.  The new building was completed and occupied in December, 1920.

A Bible School Annex was added in 1950.  This new  addition of a basement, two large first floor classrooms, minister’s study, and four second story classrooms was dedicated on September 10, 1950.

The plans for our current building began with a board retreat held in the fall of 1985.  Following that meeting property surrounding the church building was purchased.  Ground breaking for the current building took place September of 1993.  The first service in the current building took place in February 1995.  Then the former building was razed to make room for parking.
