The First Presbyterian Church in Peru was organized on Thursday, November 26, 1835 in the home of Judge William N. Hood with 13 members. In the Spring of 1836 a frame building was erected on West 3rd Street. This was the first Protestant house of worship in Miami County. On August 19, 1854 the cornerstone was laid for a new church, the first brick church. The building was enlarged in 1872 and was dedicated on January 19, 1873.
The cornerstone of the present building was laid May 1, 1905 and dedication was held June 24, 1906. The total cost exceeded $26,000. It was once said of the First Presbyterian Church that it probably housed more civic and religious meetings than any other in Peru and was regarded as "the living room of Peru where family (people of all walks of life) could get together in harmony and good will". A restoration of the sanctuary was completed in 2002 and the building still houses a very active Community of Faith which has been served by 23 called pastors over the years.
