Mission:

Our mission at First United Methodist Church of Gordon is to unite in our diversity, grow in spiritual understanding, serve the needs of our congregation, community, and the world, and experience and share the power of love.

History

The church began as the HamptonMethodistChurch, meeting in a private dwelling near the present-day OldCemetery. Once a month a Methodist circuit rider would come and preach.
In 1882 the church was moved to the newly established town of Gordon, meeting in a frame structure on the north side. In 1900 the cornerstone was laid for a new church building made of pink-toned brick with stained-glass windows and a bell tower. The new building was located at the same site as the present-day church.

In 1950 the old church was razed and the congregation moved to the American Legion Hall while a new building was constructed in the style of the chapel at Perkins School of Theology at SMU. The first service in the new church was held on December 14, 1951.
The bell from the old church was preserved in a tower at the rear of the church and is still rung for services.
