Forest Edge Elementary School, opened in 1971, serves a culturally diverse and dynamic Reston population. The student population is drawn from five different school boundaries due to the English as a second language and gifted and talented center programs housed within the building.

The school and community have a shared vision for education based on the Character Counts and the Professional Learning Community philosophies. We focus on our school as part of a dynamic community. Forest Edge continually reaches out to this community and proactively addresses the many concerns that affect our students' educational progress.

Parental involvement is a strong asset as evidenced by the multitude of volunteers and active parent participation. Staff members work collaboratively with one another and with parents to promote the success of all our students. Interactive programs and functions address not only the students' academic concerns but the social-emotional, physical, and economic needs of our students.

The academic program focuses on the whole child. We want our students to achieve at levels commensurate to their abilities and stretch the curriculum to fulfill this promise. To enable us to do so, many staff members have won grants and awards for their efforts. The entire staff works together to focus on helping students meet the educational challenges of the new millennium. SmartBoards, scanners, digital cameras, interactive encyclopedias, Internet access, Windows on Science, Hands-On Science, a fully automated library, and a minimum of three computers in each classroom help us achieve our technological goals. As a Technology Focus School, we integrate technology into all phases of our program. As a SmartBoard pilot school, these wonderful teaching tools bring this interactive technology into the hands of all our staff and students. To further enhance our program, students are involved in many after-school clubs and activities to strengthen their self-development.

Forest Edge is a school for children. We teach them to value themselves and others while preparing them, through a strong vigorous Program of Studies, for the world of the future.
