About Us
Freedom School is situated in the community of Freedom, California between the Watsonville Airport and the northern city limits of Watsonville. Freedom School serves as a vital center for the community, providing access to educational, social and recreational activities for adults as well as children. Adjacent to the school is the Freedom Children's Center, providing childcare to youngsters age 3 to 5 years. Recreational activities are an important part of Freedom School's role in the community. Youth and adult soccer teams practice at the site almost daily, and games are held on weekends.
Freedom School serves approximately six hundred kindergarten through fifth grade students, including one Special Day Class. The school population is 89% Hispanic, 76% Limited English Proficient, and 40% Migrant, with 91% coming from families who live at or below the poverty level. The school's attendance area extends from the Freedom community west to the Monterey Bay, thus including a large agricultural region. A majority of the parents are employed in agriculture.
