Gas City I-69 Speedway is located on the eastern edge of Gas City, Indiana, a city where its name may bring odd expressions from outsiders who know nothing about its history and the gas boom days. Formerly known as Harrisburg, Gas City began as a “Boom Town” when an abundance of natural gas was found in the vicinity in 1887. Following the discovery of natural gas, several citizens formed the Gas City Land Company on March 21, 1892.  Several days later, the name of Harrisburg was changed to Gas City. Located approximately 70 miles north of Indianapolis, Gas City I-69 Speedway opened in1986. Bull Bradley was one of the original co-owners. After operating for a few years the track went dormant for several years until local businessman Jack Himelick purchased the facility in 1996. Himelick has made significant upgrades during his ownership. He brought in Jiggs Thomason in 1997 to promote the ¼-mile, semi-banked clay oval in 1997 and the two enjoyed a successful 17-year run until Thomason’s retirement. In recent years various promoters have rented the facility for special events only. Motorsports executive Jerry Gappens, a Kokomo, Indiana native, leased the facility in 2018 and is returning to a full season schedule of weekly racing events. Notable drivers who have competed at the speedway include four-time NASCAR Cup Champion Jeff Gordon, who raced winged sprint cars here in the late 1980s. Popular regional/local drivers J.J. Yeley, Cory Kruseman, Levi Jones, Tony Elliott, Dave Darland have also enjoyed success at Gas City.
