George Fischer Middle School is named for George F. Fischer was a resident of Carmel for over 30 years and lived on Peekskill Hollow Road. He was born on March 6, 1896 and attended schools in the Bronx, New York. Mr. Fischer was a veteran of World War I and retired from the New York City as a policeman. After moving to Putnam county, Mr. Fischer owned a construction business in Kent for more than 15 years. He served as an active Board of Ed member of the Carmel School Board Study Council and was instrumental in planning the middle school during the late 1960's to fill a very urgent need for more classroom space. As well as being a member of the school board for many years, Mr. Fischer was active in B.O.C.E.S., the Kent Community Association, the NYC P.B.A. and Gilead Presbyterian Church in Carmel. Mr. Fischer died in November 1967 at the age of 71. He was well remembered by his colleagues and friends for his tireless work in planning for the new middle school. Consequently, the new Carmel Middle School , which was in the planning stages, was named in his memory. Mr. Fischer is buried in the Raymond Hill Cemetery.
George Fischer Middle School provides a balanced and comprehensive curriculum in a caring, sensitive atmosphere. The objective is to ensure a successful transition from the self-contained classroom structure of elementary school to the departmentalized structure of high school, while providing support and direction as these children mature from childhood to adolescence. The philosophy of George Fischer Middle School is based on the understanding of the varied changing needs of students between the ages of 10 and 14.
